Charles Nicholas

Charles Nicholas is not one person. It was a house pen name created by the Eisner and Iger studio and handed to at least three different artists: Chuck Cuidera, Jack Kirby and Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski. Will Eisner explained the practice bluntly – the publishers owned the name as well as the strip, so the artist working under it could lay no claim to it.

The man most associated with the Blue Beetle is Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski (1921–1985). The character debuted in Fox’s Mystery Men Comics number 1 in August 1939, when Wojtkoski was around seventeen. He later spent some twenty-three years at Charlton as a fast, dependable penciller across crime, mystery, science fiction, war, western and romance.

Creator credit for the Blue Beetle is genuinely contested – Wojtkoski’s family supplied supporting documentation, while Chuck Cuidera later claimed it himself. Most historians now lean towards Wojtkoski, but it is not settled. For many covers from this period the signature says Charles Nicholas and that is all it says.
