Hanging Posters Without Drilling: What Actually Holds

Rented flat, concrete ceiling, or simply no appetite for holes in the wall. There are four methods that work, and one that does not.

Adhesive strips

Hook-and-loop adhesive strips are the standard answer for framed prints. Realistically they hold up to about 2 kg per pair on a smooth, clean, dry surface – enough for an M or L print in a light frame.

Three things decide whether they hold: degrease the wall with isopropyl alcohol first, press for a full 30 seconds, and wait an hour before hanging anything. Skipping any of these is why strips fall off at three in the morning.

They do not work on woodchip wallpaper, textured plaster or freshly painted walls – paint needs several weeks to cure before it can hold anything.

Poster hangers

Two wooden or metal rails that clamp the print at top and bottom, hung from a cord over a single small nail or hook. Almost no weight, no glass, and the print stays completely reversible – nothing is glued to the paper.

This is the best option for unframed prints on heavy paper, which is what we print on: 255 gsm Lustrous Metallic or 229 gsm Matte. Both are stiff enough not to curl.

Picture rails and shelves

If your flat has an old picture rail near the ceiling, use it – it carries real weight and lets you rearrange without touching the wall again.

A narrow picture ledge is the other option: lean the prints against the wall instead of fixing them. It makes swapping motifs trivial, and overlapping two prints on one shelf looks deliberate rather than lazy. Ideal if you like changing things – a stack of animal posters or city prints can rotate with the seasons.

Washi tape and clips

Washi tape at the corners, or wooden clips on a cord, hold a single sheet at almost no cost. It is a deliberately casual look and it will not survive a draught, but it is genuinely damage-free.

What does not work

Double-sided foam tape and permanent mounting putty. Both hold well – and both take the paint with them when removed. If you rent, this is the expensive mistake.

Weight, briefly

An unframed print weighs almost nothing. A framed L print with glass is around 1–1.5 kg; an XL or 3XL with glass can pass 3 kg, which is beyond what adhesive strips manage reliably. For those sizes, use acrylic instead of glass, or accept one hole.
